Suspect driver arrested in hit-and-run collision
Police announced the arrest Thursday morning of a suspect in deadly hit-and-run Palm Springs collision.
Jesus Montano, 63, of Calexico was arrested for a felony violation of hit and run for failing to remain on scene of the traffic collision.
A woman was killed Wednesday night when Montano allegedly struck her in Palm Springs, then fled the scene in a 1996 teal green Nissan 200SX.
An officer on the scene confirmed that an adult woman died in the collision at Ramon Road and South Camino Real at 9:44 p.m.
Police said the woman, who has not yet been named, was walking northbound across Ramon Road near Camino Real.
The involved vehicle was traveling westbound on Ramon Road. Police said it did not appear the pedestrian was in a crosswalk.
Police arrested Montano a few hours later when he reported the collision at the Palm Springs Police Department.Police said his vehicle was located parked in Cathedral City and was impounded as evidence.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation. Police have not determined if alcohol or drugs played a factor in the collision.
Ramon Road and South Camino Real were shut down as police investigated the scene. The roads re-opened at 3:45 a.m. Thursday.
Montano is being held at Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning on $75,000 bail.
