Fire at Joshua Tree National Park damages landmark
A fire at Joshua Tree National Park in California has damaged a historical landmark.
The National Park Service says the fire that broke out late Monday damaged the Oasis of Mara, a site settled by Native Americans who planted the 29 palm trees that inspired the name of the city of Twentynine Palms.
Photos show multiple trees ablaze as firefighters battled heavy winds before snuffing out the flames in under an hour.
The San Bernardino County Fire Department says strong winds stoked the rapid spread of the fire that was contained at less than a square mile.
The National Park Service says the fire is being investigated as arson. No arrests have been made.
The agency says initial assessments show damage to vegetation and wildlife and potential impact to archaeological resources.
