Golf fans show up for Monday playoff at ANA Inspiration
Fans came out in numbers to watch the Monday playoff at the ANA Inspiration. They came out on a day that wasn’t expected to host any tournaments.
The putting green by Poppie’s Pond got an early morning trimming, for an unexpected Monday playoff. It’s the first time ever in tournament history. Crowds came out in numbers with fans making time.
“I’m retired, so I got lots of time,” Jim Custer said, who’s visiting from Idaho.
Others were able to make up for lost time, after missing the Sunday final.
“Well, I was thrilled it was a Monday playoff because we had a lot of plans yesterday for Easter,” Cheryl Custer-Branz, who’s visiting from Washington, said.
There were cheers for golfer Inbee Park, a former champion, but some fans were pulling for the underdog Pernilla Lindberg.
“The first time we came out here was five years ago and we saw Inbee Park win so I’d like to see Pernilla take it,” Dawn Nelson, visiting from Seattle, said.
“Just to see someone get their first win at a major is always exciting, so yeah get to be a part of history this morning,” Custer-Branz said.
Some people wanted to see a competitive playoff where players matched stroke after stroke.
“I hope it goes several holes cause I want to be here a while, until it gets warm,” Custer said.
Most of all, one fan says the free admission was welcome, and could only help grow women’s golf.
“I think the big thing is to get people here,” Custer-Branz said. “I know if I was playing, I’d want a much bigger crowd for my big moment.”
A moment that will be memorable for many.
