Deputies still looking for Mecca homicide suspect

Sheriff’s deputies were investigating a shooting in Mecca that left one person dead and several others detained, officials said.

The shooting happened at 12:18 a.m. Sunday morning along Fifth Street between Lincoln and Coahuilla streets. Deputies said they responded to a call of a possible assault with a deadly weapon. Witnesses told us several people were fighting and they heard several shots fired.

Deputies said the victim, Hugo Nunez, was airlifted to a local hospital and later died.

Authorities told us several people have been detained, but no one has been formally arrested.

Deputies have also identified the suspect as Gilbert Martinez, 29, of Indio.

The central homicide unit is investigating, officials said.
