2018 Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Palm Desert

People connected to Alzheimer’s Disease, and their many supporters, packed into Palm Desert’s Civic Center Park for the 2018 Walk to End Alzheimer’s event.

An estimated 5 million people have Alzheimer’s Disease in the United States, a number that’s expected to more than triple over the coming 30 years.

Events like Saturday’s walk are designed to raise money in the fight against Alzheimer’s, according to Jackie Kouri of the Alzheimer’s Association.

“The Coachella Valley has a tremendous need for Alzheimer’s support. And that’s exactly what the Alzheimer’s Association right here in the valley offers,” said Kouri. “We offer free programs and services for those living with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers and loved ones. We also support research to finally bring an end to Alzheimer’s,” Kouri added.

Saturday’s walk also aimed to educate the public on Alzheimer’s Disease, and showcase the many free resources available locally for those living with it or providing care for others.

Kouri said, “Alzheimer’s is the most expensive disease in America, and it has been for a couple of years. And it promises to be in the years to come. As Babyboomers are aging at the rate of 10,000 of us every single day reaching age 65. That puts us at greater risk of developing Alzheimer’s.”

Organizers were pleased with the level of energy, the estimated 400 walkers and sunny weather.

Advocates say Congress is listening, and new programs are being created to help find a cure, while also treating those with the disease.

Nearly 100-thousand dollars has been raised to help fund local programs and services.
