A hiker in distress has been rescued in the area of Snow Creek, north of Palm Springs.

According to Cal Fire they got a call around 10:40 a.m. Tuesday, that an adult male hiker was having a medical emergency on Pacific Crest Trail and Falls Creek Road in the unincorporated area of Palm Springs.

Firefighters arrived at the location and began hiking up the Pacific Crest Trail to try and locate the patient. Riverside County Sheriff Department’s helicopter also responded to assist in locating the patient, who was located approximately 2.5 miles up the trail. Crews hoisted him to an awaiting ambulance. Cal fire says that firefighters provided patient care until the patient was transported by ground ambulance to an area hospital with moderate injuries.

Key tips to keep in mind before embarking on a hike include:

– Stay hydrated. experts say carry 3 liters of water and in separate containers to ensure there’s a full bottle when reaching the turnaround point.

– Proper clothing. Layered appropriately for the elevation change.

– Cell phone. Bring it with you but turn it off so the battery doesn’t drain while searching for service in poor reception areas.

– Always tell someone where you are going and what time you expect to be back.

– Monitor forecasts. Whether it’s the heat, wind or rain, don’t be caught off guard by the elements.
