Local girl beloved by community passes away after cancer battle
Early this morning, Riley Rose Sherman passed away after an extended battle with a rare form of pediatric cancer.
“At 3:02 am, Riley Rose Sherman flew from this earth into the arms of our Lord,” reads a post from Riley’s mother, Kristin Elena Sherman’s Facebook page. “Her grandma and her family and all her other friends were waiting for her. No more pain, no more pokes, no more medicine, she is cured.”
The 6-year-old from La Quinta was fighting stage 4 neuroblastoma since August 2016.
“Mommy and daddy fought so hard for you,” continues Kristin’s post “We are sad and broken, but we are joyful knowing that she is in no more pain.”
Riley’s family shared in her fight, a fight which she was never alone in. In December, she returned home to a hero’s welcome at Palm Springs International Airport, greeted by a cheering crowd who was sure to make her homecoming a warm one. She was returning from New York, where she was undergoing treatment.
From the early stages of her fight, Riley exuded an incomparable energy that shined through even through the adversity of her illness.
“You see her spunk, and her personality,” Kristin Sherman told CBS Local 2’s Brooke Beare in October of 2016. “She’s always smiling. She loves having her dad take care of her, she has fun.”
Riley Rose Sherman’s funeral services will be held at Sacred Heart Church in Palm Desert, “at the same place that she was baptized,” closes Kristin’s post. The funeral mass and reception will take place on Tuesday, May 1st at 11 a.m.
On Sunday, April 15, a “Texas Celebration of Life” will be held for Riley Rose at the home of Chad and Cassi Ledbetter at 1211 Skyflower Lane in Celina, Texas.
“Because we were on a trial and out of state, getting her home is very, very expensive. Think 10-20k or more,” read a post by Kristin to the Riley Rose’s Journey Facebook group. “If you can give a few dollars or drop off a check at the parish or school, we would be grateful. Wiefels and Sons in Palm Desert will be handling the home arrangements.”
