Campground delay causes issues for festival campers

Weekend 2 of the Coachella Music & Arts Festival is already off to a different start than Weekend 1. High winds have delayed the opening of camping lots, leaving thousands of festival-goers stranded across the East Valley.

“We paid for that and now we’re going to get cheated out a day. and we already pay so much money to not only camp there but all the stuff we have to bring on top of that,” said Stephanie Jimenez, a festival goer from Los Angeles.

The Indio Police Department is taking the lead in the public safety plan.

“3 a.m. we’re going to be loading in those campers then we’re going to have morning traffic, school traffic, and then GA traffic for the show. They’re going to put on a great show and then we have to get all of those people home,” said Sgt. Dan Marshall of the Indio Police Department.

IPD is patrolling makeshift tailgating areas, shifting some campers out of areas and into another.

“One of them was like we’re full back there stay put. so we’re just waiting for the officers to tell us where to go next,” said Jayson Davis, a festival goer from Houston

The city of La Quinta has opened several campsites for stranded festival-goers including La Quinta City Hall, Lake Cahuilla, and the Village 29 campground next to the Spotlight 29 Casino.

“In coordination with them, we were trying to take care of both cities their deputies. We’re taking care of their areas and my deputies were taking care of Indio,” Marshall said.

Both cities doing their best to make the Coachella Fest another sweet melody.
