Coachella weekend 1 crime drops by 15% from last year
The Indio Police Department has released the initial arrest and citation statistics from weekend 1 of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival via the department’s Facebook page.
“The Coachella Concert Series kicked off last weekend with camping patron load-in on Thursday, April 12, 2018 at 9:00 a.m.,” reads the post. “With the assistance of our neighboring cities and local law enforcement partners, traffic congestion was kept to a minimum during camping load-in and a record number of campers settled in for the weekend festivities with no major incidents.”
By the numbers, festival-goers, at least in Indio, were approximately 15 percent better behaved in comparison to last year; this year, 106 total arrests were made, while in 2017, 125 arrests were made.
This year’s weekend 1 arrest breakdown:
71 arrests – Drug/Alcohol/Intoxication 24 arrests – False Identification 7 arrests – Possession of Drugs for Sales 4 arrests – Other
Indio PD also released weekend 1’s traffic citation statistics. 71 traffic-related citations were issued in total; 28 for “various motor vehicle driving violations,” and 43 for the unlawful use of a disabled person placard. Last year, the first weekend of Coachella saw 155 traffic citations in total.
Last year, Weekend 2 saw an uptick in crime, with 152 total arrests being made.
