Courtroom coverage from Day 2 of the Pinyon Pines triple murder trial

On Monday, the prosecution and [half of] the defense laid down their trial groundwork in the Pinyon Pines triple murder case, presenting opening statements. John Dolan, Cristin Smith’s attorney, argued against the initial evidence presented by the prosecution, while Jeff Moore, Robert Pape’s attorney, deferred his opening statements to a later date.

Pape and Smith are both charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of 18-year-old Becky Friedli, her mother, 53-year-old Vicki Friedli, and the latter’s boyfriend, 55-year-old Jon Hayward.

Once the two opening statements were completed, the proceedings moved on to witness testimony, with Tim Summerlee, a neighbor of the Friedli’s in Pinyon Pines, taking the stand. His testimony will resume today.
