Dangerous cows torment local hikers and threaten environment

Just to the west of Palm Springs is a vast, rolling wilderness: the Sand to Snow National Monument. It’s quiet here, but an unexpected species has taken control and opened a political can of worms.

Feral cows have charged hikers, endangered bird habitats, diminished water quality, increased potential for disease transmission to bighorn sheep.

“We understood that the number of animals was maybe in the 30-50 range, however, in the recent last couple of years, we’ve heard reports that there are maybe between 80-120 animals,” said Douglas J. Herrema, Palm Springs South Coast Field Manager for the Bureau of Land Management.

Watch Kelley Moody’s special report Danger Cows Thursday, April 26 at 5:30 p.m. on CBS Local 2 to find out how these cattle are milking the area for all its worth and why it could be so challenging to address the problem.
