Pets in jeopardy at Palm Springs mobile home park

A controversy is brewing at a Palm Springs mobile home park after a resident says he is being forced to give up his pets

Jose Magana Jr., 62, has lived at the Western Village Mobile Home Park since 2001. He says last week he received a threatening letter from the new management company. The letter says only one pet will be allowed per home, any others will need to be removed immediately. Failure to comply will result in eviction.

Magana is particularly upset because he has not one, or two or three or four or five, but six dogs. Most of them rescues. All of them, he says, up to date on papers and vaccines.

“I’d rather have them here in our house and give them a good home and not have the pounds be overpopulated the way they are,” Magana said.

Magana and his wife don’t have any children. The dogs, he says, give them something to come home to.

“We’re not ready, nobody’s ready, to give up our four-legged kids,” Magana added.

KESQ & CBS Local 2’s Katie Widner tried to speak with the property manager on site who is also listed in that letter. However, she referred us to the property management company which is based out of Los Angeles.

We spoke with the man who owns both the property and the property management company over the phone. He says all residents were provided an amendment to the rules and regulations roughly 90 days ago.

He said it was a long-standing rule that was built into the community back in the early 90s that hadn’t been enforced. He also said they are enforcing the rule for the safety and cleanliness of the community,

Another resident we spoke with agrees, there is an issue with dogs.

“The problem has just been dogs just running around. the ones who let their dogs out and just don’t care,” said Lashelle Williams, who has lived in park 12 years

But Magana said it doesn’t mean everyone should be punished.

“Those are the ones that they should go up to them and say, ‘Hey, either you comply or we’re going to do something about your pets, your dogs or yourself,'” Magana said.

The owner said he is willing to listen to individuals on their cases, but ultimately will do what is best for all tenants living at the property.
