Riverside DA appealing judge’s overturned guilty verdict ruling in Patricia Brown case
On April 3rd, Patricia Brown was out of jail for the first time since August of 2016. Her release followed a Riverside judge’s decision to grant her bail on April 3 and came just shy of a month after the decision was made to grant her a new trial.
Yesterday, it was announced that Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin is appealing Riverside County Superior Court Judge John G. Evans’ decision to overturn Brown’s guilty verdict. The District Attorney is arguing that the original second-degree murder conviction should stand. The new trial was granted after the judge ruled that there was insufficient evidence for her conviction.
The DA has filed the appeal to the 4th District Appellate Court of Appeals – District 2.
Brown is accused of murder in the 2003 death of Deetrick Brown, her stepson. The prosecution has argued that Deetrick’s death was the result of abuse, while the defense has argued that Patricia never harmed the child and that he already had developmental issues before he started living with the Browns.
The next hearing in the case is set for Friday.
