Student Athlete of the Week – Wyatt Snellenberger

Wyatt Snellenberger threw for nearly 5,000 yards at the small Christian school in Bermuda Dunes and now he’s headed to the Big-12 where he is soon to become a Baylor Bear at the Christian school in Waco.

“Especially walking on out there and seeing all the big players and such, I was obviously star struck. I always felt like I could do it and if it’s something I worked for I could reach it,” Wyatt Snellenberger said of his trip to Waco.

He has defied the odds and proved that it might be rare, but an 8-man football player can be a Baylor Bear.

“Felt like I had something to prove cause I am not a big school like Palm Desert, La Quinta, Shadow Hills so something more to prove. Especially going out to one of those campuses cause I play 8-man at a little Christian school so I have to go out there and show what I can do,” Snellenberger said.

Future Dr. Snellenberger is going to be really busy balancing school and sports like he did in high school with his 4.3 GPA.

“Sports don’t work out I am majoring in biology right now and pre-med track. Plan to become a surgeon in something,” Snellenberger said of his future academic plans.

Making a lot of friends along the day.

“Been a blessing playing for DCA. Made a lot of memories,” Snellenberger added.

“That’s the special thing is that he doesn’t just cater to his friends that are seniors but embraces the freshman and creates a culture in them from day one. Hopefully they step up and fill those shoes as big as they are when he leaves,” said head baseball coach Greg Collins.

His senior football season was a challenge. Overcoming injuries for the first time in his career and had to learn to be a different kind of leader.

“I had to learn how to lead from the sidelines or inside the dugout. Learn how to lead without my talent overall,” Snellenberger said of his challenging football season.

Everything happens for a reason.

“Wanting to play another game. Watching my people play out there without me and I knew I really wanted to play out there so it pushed me to pick up my game so I could play college ball,” Snellenberger finished.
