UPDATING: Crime scene evidence scrutinized in Day 3 of Pinyon Pines triple murder trial

Cristin Smith and Robert Pape returned to Riverside County court today for the third day of their trial.

Pape and Smith are both charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths 18-year-old Becky Friedli, her mother, 53-year-old Vicki Friedli, and the latter’s boyfriend, 55-year-old Jon Hayward. The defendants also face special circumstance allegations of taking multiple lives relating to the alleged 2006 killings.

On Monday, the majority of the court floor time was dedicated to opening statements for Cristin Smith and the prosecution, with Robert Pape’s attorney deferring his opening statements to a later date.

Tim Summerlee, a neighbor of the Friedli’s in Pinyon Pines, began his witness testimony on Monday, and his time on the stand carried over to Tuesday. Summerlee was one of the first people to arrive to the Friedli residence on the night of killings and had called emergency responders that night after he saw a fire from his house.

Also on the stand Tuesday was Cal Fire Captain Jeff Williams and Riverside Sheriff Deputy Jerry Osterloh, who were both on the scene on the night of the killings.
