Desert Hot Springs police arrest residential burglary suspect
Desert Hot Springs police arrest man accused of a residential burglary.
Officers received reports of a residential burglary in progress Friday shortly before 4:00 pm at the 66800 block of Joshua Court in Desert Hot Springs.
According to a news release by DHS PD, the homeowner told dispatchers he arrived home and found a man inside his home. Officers arrived and found the suspect, Jason Douglas Smith, 43, of Desert Hot Springs standing in the street. Smith was detained without incident.
Officers later learned that the homeowner confronted Smith inside the residence and, with help from friends and neighbors, recovered property Smith allegedly stole. The homeowner then called 911 and kept Smith unable to flee the gated community until police could arrive.
Smith was arrested and booked into the Riverside County Jail in Banning where he will be housed without bail due to his current parole status. He was booked on numerous charges including 1st-degree residential burglary and occupied dwelling during a burglary.
