Telecommunications expert takes stand to start Day 11 of Pinyon Pines murder trial
On Thursday, Day 10 of the Pinyon Pines triple murder trial, the first family member of Becky and Vicki Friedli took the witness stand.
Jessica “Drew” Friedlii, sister of Becky and daughter of Vicki, testified that she didn’t believe that her 18-year-old sister was dating anyone at the time of her death, but Jeff Moore, Robert Pape’s attorney, pointed out conflicts in her memory during cross-examination in open court. Drew stated that she was “100 percent positive Vicky did not date any Marines,” but this statement was seemingly in conflict with an initial statement given to a detective, which mentioned her sister possibly dating a marine named Dane from Twentynine Palms.
Caleb Curtner, a Riverside County Sheriff’s Department forensic analyst, also took the stand on Thursday, providing testimony about photos downloaded from Pape’s phone in 2007 revealing a large stockpile of weapons. In September 2006, Pape told investigators that he didn’t own any firearms.
Cristin Smith and Robert Pape are both charged with three counts of first-degree murder with special circumstance allegations of taking multiple lives. The 29-year-olds face life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted in the killings of Becky Friedli, Vicki Friedli, and Jon Hayward on Sept. 17, 2006.
Day 11 of the trial started off with the reexamination a previous topic of focus in the trial, cell phone data. Greg Guillette, a senior analyst with Gladiator Forensics, took the stand to begin testimony today. Gladiator Forensics a telecommunications company that analyzes cell phone data.
The data reviewed allegedly shows Pape and Smith moving in the direction of the Friedli residence on the night of the killings.
