4 earthquakes strike north of Cabazon in 10-hour-span

Update: 2:08 p.m. A 2.5 magnitude earthquake was centered 6.8 miles north of Cabazon at a depth of 8 miles. It is the fourth earthquake to strike in the area today.

Update: 10:11 a.m. A 2.5 magnitude earthquake was centered 5.59 miles north of Cabazon at a depth of 7.3 miles. It is the third earthquake to strike in the area today.

People around the Coachella Valley and much of Southern California reported feeling a moderate earthquake Tuesday morning.

A 4.5 magnitude earthquake was felt at 4:49 a.m. centered 7 miles north of Cabazon. It was at a depth of 8 miles. That first quake was followed by a second 3.2 magnitude earthquake at 4:51 a.m. centered in the same general location.

There were no initial reports of any damage or injuries.

A lot of viewers reported feeling the shaking. Wanda Lowery said on Facebook, “I live in Palm Desert and it shook the whole building here.”

Laura Lombardi MacDougal from Bermuda Dunes said, “My dog started barking then I felt the shaking.”

Donald Hill said, “It was a JOLT here in Beaumont.”

Rhonda Black-Firestone wrote, “That was one way to wake up. Who needs an alarm clock? We have earthquakes to wake us all up!”

Diane Kortmeyer Cathedral City said she, “felt a pretty good shake, rattle and roll.”

Jesse Nunez was driving through Cabazon on Interstate 10 when he experienced the quake. Nunez said, “It felt like a strong gust of wind pushing me sideways. I didn’t know it was an earthquake.”

Michele Nisporic said, “It rattled my dishes in the cupboards! Nothing broken at all, but I could hear it.”

Viewers reported feeling the quake as far away as San Diego, Oceanside, Los Angeles and to the northwest in Palmdale.

Adryana Serrano Espinoza said she felt the quake in Coachella, but several viewers said they did not feel or hear anything in and around Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage.

Elizabeth Flowers wrote on Facebook that the quake, “didn’t make a rumble, just a soft wave.”

The initial quakes were followed by approximately 50 much smaller aftershocks in the 0 to 2.0 range as of 7:00 a.m.
