Palm Springs joins amicus brief opposing President Trump’s sanctuary state lawsuit
Palm Springs is the first Riverside County city to join an amicus brief opposing a federal lawsuit seeking to overturn California’s sanctuary state law and two other state laws providing protections for undocumented immigrants.
The Palm Springs City Council unanimously approved adding the city to a list of municipalities and counties supporting a trio of laws, particularly SB 54, which limits cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities.
The law was recently challenged in a lawsuit filed by the Trump administration, which also opposes California’s AB 450, which provides protections for immigrant workers and AB 103, which prohibits the extended detention of undocumented immigrants.
The City Council’s decision to join the brief led by the ACLU of Southern California came late Wednesday night.
“It is important that the city of Palm Springs takes a leadership role in supporting our immigrant population, who are the backbone of our local economy,” Councilwoman Christy Holstege said. “We’re here to stand up for California values and we’re here to stand up for Palm Springs values. It is important that everyone feels safe in our city and our state.”
Councilman Geoff Kors, who along with Holstege, requested that the city join the brief, said, “Palm Springs is proud to send a message to our immigrant community that we are here for them and we are going to stand up for their rights. Our values demand that we protect and welcome everyone who sets foot in our city and we are proud to support the rights of our immigrant population.”
