Jury instructions, courtroom camera clearance discussed on Day 18 of Pinyon Pines trial

On Day 16 of the Pinyon Pines triple murder trial, the prosecution rested. On the following day, the defense followed suit. Today, day 18 of the trial, Judge Bernard Schwartz informed the court that the prosecution would not be offering a rebuttal in the day’s session.

The morning session saw a discussion of whether or not Dateline NBC’s cameras would be allowed to film the closing arguments. Judge Schwartz recognized the need for the public to be made aware of the case, but also emphasized the importance of the jury’s privacy and the need for consistency when it came to policies about allowing cameras in the courtroom.

Cristin Smith and Robert Pape are both charged with three counts of first-degree murder with special circumstance allegations of taking multiple lives. The 29-year-olds face life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted of killing Becky Friedli, her mom, Vicki Friedli, and the latter’s boyfriend, Jon Hayward, on the night of Sept. 17, 2006.

Closing arguments are expected to begin tomorrow. Court has ended for the day.
