Roof collapses as fire crews battle flames at home near Desert Hot Springs

Smoke could be seen billowing out of what was a roof at a home in Desert Hot Springs Sunday night.

The flames broke out around 9:15 at a 2,000 square foot home in the 67000 block of 20th Avenue, said CAL FIRE/Riverside. First arriving crews reported the garage was on fire. The flames then spread to the attic of the home, causing firefighters to fight the flames defensively from the outside. The roof eventually gave in and collapsed.

A pick-up truck parked in the driveway of the home was also badly damaged. There was no word on if there were any injuries. Nearly two-dozen firefighters responded to the scene. Crews had it under control by 10:30 p.m.

CAL Fire said seven people were displaced and the Red Cross was called in to assist.
