Ex-con pleads not guilty to attempted murder charges in connection with Desert Hot Springs shooting
An ex-con pleaded not guilty today to attempted murder charges in the shooting of a man in Desert Hot Springs.
Jeffrey Grant Hammer, 33, is accused in a Sunday shooting of an unidentified man in the 66700 block of Eighth Street, according to the Desert Hot Springs Police Department. The victim, who suffered a gunshot to the upper body, was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, police said. The severity of his injuries was not disclosed.
Hammer was arrested at 10:12 a.m. Monday after “detectives received information that the suspect was hiding at a location in the 66300 block of Seventh Street,” police said.
Hammer’s relationship, if any, to the victim was not disclosed. Police said no other outstanding suspects are being sought in connection with the shooting.
Hammer, who’s being held on $1 million bail, also faces two counts of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. Court records show that he has prior Riverside County felony convictions for burglary, grand theft and identity theft.
After pleading not guilty to all counts Wednesday afternoon, Hammer is due back in court June 22 for a felony settlement conference.
