Man arrested for alleged stabbing, armed robbery in Banning

A man accused of stabbing another man several times in Banning, just weeks after allegedly robbing the same victim at gunpoint, was in custody today on suspicion of attempted murder.

Steven Martinez, 20, of Banning, is accused of stabbing an unidentified 30-year-old man last Friday in the 1100 block of West Cottonwood Road, according to the Banning Police Department. Officers found the victim at 2:15 p.m. in the 1300 block of West Ramsey Street, less than a mile south of where police say he was stabbed.

He was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs for treatment of non-life threatening injuries and was later released from the hospital, police said.

Banning police say that two weeks prior to the stabbing, Martinez allegedly robbed the victim at gunpoint and pistol whipped him in the head. Then on June 8, the men became “engaged in a physical altercation,” which led to Martinez allegedly retrieving a “large knife” and stabbing the man several times.

Martinez was arrested at about 2 p.m. Wednesday, after a citizen reported a person matching Martinez’s description in the 1800 block of West Ramsey Street. During his arrest, police say they also recovered stolen property from the stabbing victim.

Martinez was booked into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning, where he was being held in lieu of $1 million bail.

Anyone with additional information on the incidents was asked to contact the Banning Police Department at (951) 922-3170.
