Repair begins on road into Coachella Valley Nature Preserve
Work is underway on improvements to the main road into a Coachella Valley nature preserve, which officials today said would improve safety in the area for bicyclists and pedestrians.
The Thousand Palms Canyon Road Widening, Turning Lane and Resurfacing Project will add a protected left-turn pocket and resurface a half-mile segment of Thousand Palms Canyon Road, which serves as the entrance into the Thousand Palms Oasis Preserve.
Work on the $1.1 million project began this month and is expected to be completed in about two months’ time, officials said.
“By providing smooth pavement free of ruts and a wider shoulder along the curve, this project will enhance the safety of all who share this beautiful byway,” Fourth District County Supervisor V. Manuel Perez said. “I commend staff of the Riverside County Transportation Department for their efforts in successfully pursuing grant funds to make these important improvements and coordinating this project after the peak season at the preserve, with as minimal impact to residents as possible.”
The preserve will be closed to the public during the construction period, but no full road closures were expected. Two-way traffic, controlled by flaggers, will be open during any partial lane closures.
“This project will make Thousand Palms Canyon Road safer for local drivers, visitors, bicyclists, and the occasional pedestrians who are touring the area,” said Estelle Dahl, chair of the Indio Hills Community Council.
