Aerial support helps stop wildfire near Idyllwild

A wildfire that broke out today on a mountainside in the San Bernardino National Forest near Idyllwild was stopped after scorching less than an acre.

The blaze, dubbed the “Indian Fire,” was reported about 1:50 p.m. in the area of Pine Cove, an unincorporated community just north of Idyllwild, off state Route 243.

According to U.S. Forest Service spokesman Zach Behrens, the brusher was contained by 3:30 p.m., and crews were expected to be mopping up for several hours.

Behrens said volunteers staffing two fire lookout towers miles apart spotted the smoke and flame in the federal preserve and alerted USFS rangers.
Multiple engine crews deployed to the remote location and encircled the fire. The cause was under investigation.

Temperatures were in the upper 70s, with 5 mph westerly winds and 10 percent relative humidity when crews reached the blaze.
