Palm Springs’ 1st LGBT senior facility hosts Stonewall uprising anniversary event

Palm Springs’ first senior assisted living village for the LGBT community is hosting its annual open house event today on the anniversary of the historic Stonewall uprising, considered one of the seminal moments in LGBT history.

Stonewall Gardens, which was named after the 1969 riots at the Stonewall Inn in New York’s Greenwich Village, will celebrate the legacy of the uprising at 2 p.m. with an open house that will feature tours of the village, and a keynote speech from Brian Wanzek, better known as local drag queen Bella da Ball.

Wanzek will touch on the Stonewall uprising and the role of New York’s drag community in the altercations with law enforcement.

Last year’s speaker was Palm Springs City Councilmember Lisa Middleton, the first transgender person to be elected to a non-judicial office in California, who spoke on transgender rights.

The event is free and open to the public, but due to limited seating, guests were asked to RSVP at (760) 832-5428 or at LKabakoff@NorthstarSL.com.
