Temperatures as high as 112 expected during Coachella Valley weekend heatwave
A heat wave will hit the Coachella Valley this weekend, with the mercury expected to reach as high as 112 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
An NWS excessive heat warning is set to go into effect, beginning 11 a.m. Sunday through 8 p.m. Monday.
Afternoon highs of 109 to 112 degrees are expected for the Coachella Valley, with forecasters specifically listing the cities of Indio, Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Palm Desert, La Quinta, Coachella, Banning and Desert Hot Springs among the affected areas.
Those in the desert are cautioned to stay out of the midday sun, drink plenty of fluids and stay in air-conditioned environments, if possible.
“The heat will greatly increase the chance of heat illnesses, especially for those who are not acclimated,” the warning reads.
Residents also are advised to check on relatives and neighbors during the heat wave, and to ensure young children and pets are not left unattended in vehicles “under any circumstances.
