Thunderstorms hit upper Palm Canyon triggering advisory

(CNS) – Heavy rain fell beneath a summer thunderstorm in the mountains south of Palm Springs on Sunday, triggering an advisory that washes and streams could flood in the mountains south of the Coachella Valley.

A “small stream flood advisory” was issued at 2:45 p.m. for the area around Anza, and the Palms To Pines Highway (Route 74) between Indio and San Diego County.

Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms, according to meteorologists at the National Weather Service in San Diego. Locations that will likely experience flooding include the mountains
southwest of Palm Springs and south of Palm Desert, and Santa Rosa Mountain south of Anza. The advisory area includes upper Palm Canyon, which drains into Palm Springs.

Route 74 might get inundated, causing unsafe driving on route 74 between San Diego County and the Coachella Valley, the NWS said.
