122-acre fire in Palm Springs fully contained
UPDATE: A brush fire burning in south Palm Springs was 100% contained by Monday evening, said Kate Anderson, the spokesperson for the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. Anderson clarified that fire area did not grow, 122-acres is just a more accurate measurement
ORIGINAL STORY: The situation remains at a stand-still for a wildfire burning in Palm Springs, said Kate Anderson, the spokesperson for the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians.
The estimated area burned had been reassessed at 80 acres as of Saturday afternoon, upgraded from estimated 70 acres that were thought to have burned Friday, Anderson said. The fire is not growing and is standing at 60 percent containment.
Crews were monitoring the hot spots and patrolling the fire line Saturday.
Firefighters with the Palm Springs Fire Department first responded to reports of a brush fire near South Palm Canyon Drive and Acanto Drive at mid-morning Friday. The flames spread out to multiple thickets of vegetation and quickly engulfed one structure described as an ‘old farmhouse,’ said Anderson.
A total of three structures were consumed by the flames, including an old farm house. No major injuries were reported.
“All five Palm Springs fire units are on scene, along with 12 mutual aid fire units from CALFIRE, Cathedral City Fire and Bureau of Land Management, along with four Chief Officers from those jurisdictions,” said Anderson. “The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians are on scene and are supporting the coordinated effort. “
The Band evacuated all guests from Indian Canyons Resort on Friday, which was in close proximity to the fire. The tribe is allowing a Cal Fire fire suppression helicopter to draw water from a pond on the resort’s golf course to help fight the fire. Indian Canyons remained closed to visitors Saturday, Anderson said.
Palm Canyon Drive and Acanto Drive were being shut down near the site of the blaze.
“[The] Fire affecting tribal land area known as Andreas Ranch, an area that is known as allotted trust land — land that is not owned by the Agua Caliente Tribal Government,” said Anderson. “It is unknown at this time how much land is involved. And, containment is also unknown at this time.T he fire involves one older farm house that is fully involved in the fire. No other structures are compromised at this time.”
