Mother and son dead following apparent Coachella murder-suicide

At 5:44 p.m. Thursday, law enforcement responded to a call to the Cedar Springs apartment complex in Coachella. Upon arriving, they discovered the scene of an apparent murder-suicide; KESQ & CBS Local 2 has confirmed today that the deceased were a mother and son.

“It’s just crazy because its close to home and it’s just right there. just right across from me man,” said Pedro Rodriguez, a resident of the complex.

According to Riverside County Sheriff’s investigators, the son killed his mother, and then took his own life. The scene was discovered and reported by a younger brother in the family.

“Upon arrival, they located two deceased subjects. At this stage in the investigation, it does appear to be a murder-suicide,” said Chris Willison of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Some resident told KESQ & CBS Local 2 the suspect struggled with mental health issues.

“I was shocked when i heard about it. i heard the guy was 5150 and he wasn’t all there and stuff. so people take that for granted and stuff and people like that need help,” Mario Rodriguez, a resident of the apartment

The typically quiet community is eerily silent after such a flare-up of brutal violence.

The Sheriff’s department said this was a family issue and there are no outstanding suspects or threats to the community. Anyone with information on what happened is asked to contact the sheriff’s central homicide unit at (951) 955-2777.
