Nominations open for Palm Springs Walk of Stars with new application criteria

The nomination period opened today for the Palm Springs Walk of Stars, with new criteria in place in response to calls to tighten up the requirements for applicants.

“It’s a different process, so when you apply for a star now, initially it’ll go to a committee of experts that will look at the application to make sure that it fits the criteria. Then, it goes to a separate group that will look at it and they will dig deeper into it to make sure that whatever you submitted it accurately and then it goes to my board of directors, so its three phases of approval for the star,” said Nona Watson, CEO of the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce.

The deadline for submissions is Aug. 31 for those looking to apply under seven categories: humanitarian, entertainment, civic/pioneer, architects/artists, sports star, military and literary.

With more than 400 stars on display in downtown Palm Springs, city officials and residents sought to raise the standards for new stars to consider those with more widespread prominence than previously sought, while also having a connection to the city. The price for a star was also raised from $10,000 to $15,000.
“The money will go to the city. We will get our management fee, but the money will go into a fund that will go to the residents of Palm Springs in the form of programs and services,” Watson said.

Nominations are considered at the annual Palm Springs Walk of Stars committee meeting in September.

Nomination forms can be found on the Palm Springs Chamber website at pschamber.org, under the drop-down menu “Walk of the Stars.” All nominations must include a photo of the nominee, a brief bio and list of qualifications and contributions to the community, and a letter of agreement from the nominee.
