Man arrested in Thousand Palms for possession of weapon

A man is in custody after police conducted a stop Friday night and found he was in possession of an assault-style weapon. The Coachella Valley Violent Crime Gang Task Force said during a traffic stop in Thousand Palms, 20 year old Mateo Ramirez Hernandez got out of his car.

Hernandez was arrested a short distance from where he was pulled over near Stanton Drive and Sonoma Circle. Task Force officers said they seized an AR 15 assault rifle and a 9-millimeter handgun during the stop.

Hernandez was arrested for possession of a concealed firearm, possession of an assault rifle and an outstanding arrest warrant for evading police.

Hernandez was booked at the Riverside County Jail in Indio.
