Police to conduct active shooter training at Desert Hot Springs High School
The Desert Hot Springs Police Department will conduct an active shooter training exercise at Desert Hot Springs High School next week.
The exercise, slated for Thursday morning, “will simulate a multi-discipline, multi-jurisdiction and multi-agency response to an active shooter on a high school campus,” according to a police statement.
Along with police, school officials, firefighters, and paramedics will take part, with volunteers standing in as victims and other bystanders.
The drill is slated to run until 11 a.m. Thursday, and is being coordinated by the Desert Hot Springs Police Department, Cal Fire, and the Palm Springs Unified School District.
Residents are being advised to avoid the area, as there will be a “significant amount of law enforcement personnel both on campus and in the surrounding areas before, during and after the exercise.”
“This exercise is designed to provide a learning environment for participants to carry out response plans, policies, and procedures,” DHS police Chief Dale Mondary said. “It will also provide an opportunity to implement multi-agency coordination with community partners and to familiarize
responders with their roles and responsibilities in planning, preparing for, and responding to an active shooter incident.”
A pair of active shooter drills were conducted by the Indio Police Department this week at Indio High School — the first such exercises to be conducted on that campus.
