Morning thunderstorms rattle the Coachella Valley, 26 lightning strikes confirmed

Heavy rain, thunder and lightning hit the valley Wednesday overnight. No word on any flooding or road closures.

According to the National Weather Service, the Coachella Valley had 26 cloud-to-lighting strikes this morning, while the High Desert had 19.

A spectacular light show could be seen north of the valley. A large display of lightning lit up the sky over Joshua Tree and 29 Palms.

The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory earlier this morning, but it was lifted from our area at 5:15 AM.

With thunder and lightning you’ll want heed the warning from the National Weather Service. If it roars stay indoors. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Seek shelter immediately in a sturdy building or, if a building is not available, a hard-topped vehicle with the windows rolled up.

Storms are presently weakening and passing out of the area this morning, headed toward the south and west for our local mountains. It’s possible we could see more storms develop during the afternoon hours, those chances are dwindling.
