Search continues for missing Canadian hiker in Joshua Tree

Search and rescue efforts are continuing, after the wife of a 51-year old Canadian man reported her husband missing while hiking at Joshua Tree National Park on Friday.

“We’ve had anywhere between 30 and 40 searchers on the ground out there we’ve been augmented by San Bernardino Sheriff Department helicopter also their search and rescue group as well as canine units, said” George Land, the Public Information Officer for Joshua Tree National Park.

Miller’s vehicle was found parked at the 49 Palm Oasis trailhead.

However authorities have found no other trace of him.

He was last seen saying goodbye to his wife as he went to hike the trail alone.

The park thermometer reaching nearly 110 degrees on Saturday.

“We can’t impress upon people enough…that it’s hot up here. If you don’t really have to hike, don’t hike in these conditions,” said Land.

Park authorities say if you do choose to hike in the heat, go with a friend, try to hike in the early morning hours and of course take plenty of water.

The trail remains closed as search efforts continue.

“We’re hoping that we find him in good health and we’re able to return him to his loved ones, said” Land.

Miller is describe as a white male, 5’5″ tall, weighing approximately 160 lbs. According to Land, yesterday’s search included over 35 searchers, including Joshua Tree National Park Search and Rescue as well as air support from San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department.
