First responders hold active shooter drill at Desert Hot Springs High today

An active shooter training exercise was expected to bring a response of police, school officials, firefighters and paramedics at Desert Hot Springs High School Thursday morning.

The exercise was set to run from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the campus at 65850 Pierson Boulevard.

A police department statement said the exercise, “will simulate a multi-discipline, multi-jurisdiction and multi-agency response to an active shooter on a high school campus.’

Volunteers were set to role play victims and other bystanders.

People are being urged to stay away from the campus and surrounding area due to a significant number of emergency responders there before, during and afterward.

Police Chief Dale Mondary said the exercise will, “provide a learning environment for participants to carry out response plans, policies, and procedures.”

It will also give agencies a chance to practice coordination with other community partners and to better learn their roles and responsibilities in planning, preparing for, and responding to an active shooter incident.

The drill was coordinated by the Desert Hot Springs Police Department, Cal Fire, and the Palm Springs Unified School District.
