Riverside County jobless rate spikes after historic May

Riverside County’s unemployment rate shot up last month amid losses in multiple sectors of the regional economy, state figures released today show.

The jobless rate in June, based on preliminary estimates, was 4.8 percent, compared to 3.8 percent in May, according to the California Employment Development Department.

Despite rising above its historic low, the rate remained six-tenths of a percentage point below the year-ago level, when countywide unemployment stood at 5.4 percent.

Roughly 52,000 residents were out of work in June, according to the EDD.

The unincorporated community of Cabazon had the highest unemployment rate countywide at 12.4 percent, followed by Coachella at 9.4 percent and Winchester at 8.4 percent.

The combined unemployment rate for Riverside and San Bernardino counties in June was 4.7 percent, compared to 3.7 percent in May.

Bi-county data indicated payrolls contracted in five sectors of the regional economy — financial services, government, health services, leisure and hospitality and retail trade, which altogether shed 5,400 jobs.

Other sectors were unchanged or posted modest gains. Last month’s biggest gainer was professional services, where 800 positions were added, according to the EDD.

The agency said that the state’s non-seasonally-adjusted jobless rate in June was 4.5 percent.
