Corona brush fire torchers 282 acres, 90 percent contained

The Skyline Fire south of Corona was 90 percent contained today as hundreds of firefighters worked to put out the last of a blaze that at one time threatened homes and prompted evacuation orders.

The fire was smoldering and would remain in mop-up status as firefighters remain at the scene to improve containment and control lines, Corona Fire Department officials said.

224 firefighters and 18 fire engines are being employed to battle the blaze, according to Cal Fire.

The size of the blaze was increased from 250 to 282 acres due to more accurate mapping, officials said.

The fire was reported shortly after 3 p.m. Thursday in the area of Skyline Drive and Burrero Way, at the foot of the Cleveland National Forest, according to authorities. The acreage consumed by the fire has not grown since Thursday night.

An evacuation order went into effect two hours the blaze broke out. However, most evacuees were permitted to return to their properties by about 10 p.m. Thursday and the remainder of residents were allowed to return by Friday night.

No one was hurt, officials said.

Fire officials said that the Tin Mine and Skyline trails were closed until further notice due to firefighting activity in those areas.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
