Excessive Heat Warning continues today

A record-breaking heat wave is expected to produce peak high temperatures Tuesday and Wednesday sending temperatures soaring well into the triple digits around the Coachella Valley and rest of the Inland Empire.

Most of the area will see high temperatures ranging from 108 to 114 degrees both days. High temperatures in the Coachella Valley are expected to top out at 122 degrees Tuesday before cooling slightly to 118 degrees Wednesday.

The high-pressure system bringing the relentless heat prompted the weather service to issue an Excessive Heat Warning. It took effect at 10 a.m. Monday and was set to remain in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday night.

Palm Springs and Thermal set maximum temperature records of 119 degrees and 122 degrees respectively Monday.

The extreme heat made it more difficult for firefighters working to extinguish wildfires burning in the east valley Monday.

Tuesday’s highs are expected to be 113 degrees in Riverside, 107 in Banning, 121 in Palm Springs and 122 in Indio. Thermal is expected to reach 123 degrees Tuesday and 121 degrees on Wednesday. Both of those temperatures would break previous heat records.

The California Independent System Operator Corporation issued a statewide Flex Alert Monday that called for voluntary electricity conservation from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the evening through Wednesday.

An Excessive Heat Warning is issued when high temperatures combine with elevated humidity levels to increase the risk of heat exposure-related illnesses. High temperatures this month have played a role in the deaths of four people.

People are urged to protect themselves and their loved ones, wear light clothing and try to stay in an air-conditioned place.

You can also check on friends and neighbors especially the elderly. And never leave a child, a senior, or a pet in a vehicle parked in the heat as the vehicle’s interior temperatures can quickly turn deadly.
