Thermal brush fire now 65% contained

UPDATE: Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. Cal Fire says the fire was 40 acres and 65% contained.

ORIGINAL STORY: Cal Fire/Riverside County fire crews are on the scene of a vegetation fire near the intersection of Martinez Road and Avenue 66 in Thermal. Approximately 50 homes in the area are being evacuated.

The 40-acre fire was reported at 2:55 p.m. As of 8:45 p.m. Monday, the fire was 35% contained.

Over 100 firefighters, 10 fire engines, and 2 air attack units are being employed to battle the blaze in the 120+ degree heat and high winds. Sunline buses are on the scene to provide relief from the heat for fire personnel. Firefighters will be at the scene throughout the night and tomorrow to reach full containment.

Three firefighters have sustained minor injuries. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

Cal Fire officials added that a total of seven structures (mobile homes, outbuildings), one bus, one RV, and 13 vehicles were destroyed. One structure was damaged.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is on the scene assisting with evacuations. Roads have been closed between Martinez Rd and Polk Street between Avenue 66 and Avenue 68.
