Animals evacuated during Cranston Fire return home

Yesterday, dozens of horses returned to the Living Free Animal Sanctuary in Mountain Center. The big animals were housed in shelters in the west valley.

The nearly 200 dogs evacuated found a temporary home in the desert.

“I think they could sense something wrong, they’ve been here a long time so they trust the caregivers, they went with them,” said Randall Harris, president of the sanctuary, describing the scene as they evacuated cats and dogs.

Sanctuary crews worked quickly to load the animals as flames narrowed in.

“I got down the mountain and thought we had a 20 percent chance,” Harris recalled.

Now that the danger is gone and the ranch almost untouched, today workers at the Humane Society loaded crates to bring the dogs back home.

The 150-acre property was saved thanks to the firefighters and abatement efforts to maintain the property.

Groundskeeper Rudy Nunez, who first spotted the flames, helped save the sanctuary with the help of the team.

“This team is second to none, whether it’s a get-together barbeque or getting these animals off the mountain,” Nunez said.

The dogs are now back in the sanctuary, happy, healthy and ready to find forever homes.
