1,000-acre Camp Pendleton fire now 50 percent contained
Firefighters at Camp Pendleton and the North San Diego County Fire Protection District worked today to clear vegetation around a 1,000-acre brush fire.
Officials at the sprawling Marine Corps base tweeted around noon Sunday that a three-acre fire had broken out on Wilcox Range. About an hour later, they announced the fire had spread to about 100 acres, and by 3:30 p.m. it was more than 600 acres.
At 7:09 p.m. Sunday, officials reported the fire was 50 percent contained but had consumed 1,000 acres.
It wasn’t immediately clear if any structures were threatened on base. North County Fire Protection District officials said there was no threat to lands in their jurisdiction area off the post. Photos posted on the Twitter feed of Camp Pendleton Public Affairs did not show any threatened structures.
Riverside County firefighters warned the public that smoke could be expected in the Murrieta and Temecula area.
