Hemet High School teacher arrested for alleged sexual relationship with student
A math teacher at Hemet High School has been arrested on numerous sexual assault charges for alleged relationship with a student.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department received a tip on August 3 regarding a possible past relationship between Hemet High School teacher and student. Investigators conducted an investigation into these allegations and determined a crime occurred during the 2017/2018 school year.
The suspect, Miguel Chavez, 27 of Riverside, a math teacher at Hemet High School, was arrested on August 6 in Hemet. Chavez was booked into Southwest Detention Center in Murrieta on charges of on
lewd acts on a child, statutory rape and lascivious conduct.
We learned on Tuesday Chavez was previously a teacher at Rancho Mirage High School during the 2015/16 school year.
Chavez was at Rancho Mirage High School from 2014 to 2016, Joan Boiko, a spokesperson for PSUSD confirmed. Boiko said the reason Chavez was let go from RMHS was because he was a ” non re-elect,” which means he was on probation as all new teachers are for two years. The district chose not to hire him permanently.
He is being held on $500,000 bail and is scheduled to be in court on Wednesday.
Investigators believe additional victims exist and are requesting they come forward. This is an ongoing investigation, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact Investigator Porrazzo at (951) 791-3400.
