A look at the first day of school for PSUSD

School’s back for the summer, at least for students in Palm Springs Unified School District. As with any school year kickoff, there is always an all-permeating sense of newness.

But some major change’s have come for Desert Hot Spring High School, where a fresh coat of paint provides an obvious physical change, and behind the scenes, the school welcomes a new principal in Caroline Cota.

“Today will be my first chance to really get to see a lot of students,” said Cota. “…Working with students hand in hand throughout their college search and application process to ensure that every student from our school who wants to go on to college is successful in doing so.”

One junior at DHS High has hopes that the new leadership will ensure a more driven student body.

“The last one wasn’t that into it,” said Jeremy Lockwood. “But this one, I hope is more motivated to help us more.”

The District will also be implementing a closed campus policy to help bolster the safety of students, faculty, and staff. And parents are appreciative, even if the change isn’t necessarily easy.

“I know its hard for parents…It was hard for me,” said Shawndra Garin, a parent. “But you’re letting them go be independent because if you cling onto them you’re not gonna be independent.”
