Hemet teacher accused of sex with student taught at Rancho Mirage High School in 2015-16

The Hemet High School teacher arrested on Monday for an alleged sexual relationship with a student was a teacher at Rancho Mirage High School during the 2015/16 school year, PSUSD officials confirmed.

Miguel Chavez, 27, was a math teacher at Hemet High School during the 2017/18 school year, was arrested on Monday on suspicion of lewd acts on a child, statutory rape and lascivious conduct, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

A news release by the Sheriff’s Department stated they received a tip about a possible relationship between Chavez and a student. The investigation determined that the alleged acts occurred during the 2017-18 academic year.

Chavez was at Rancho Mirage High School from 2014 to 2016, Joan Boiko, a spokesperson for PSUSD confirmed. Boiko said the reason Chavez was let go from RMHS was because he was a ” non re-elect,” which means he was on probation as all new teachers are for two years. The district chose not to hire him permanently.

Chavez was taken into custody on Monday in Hemet and is being held on $500,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.

Investigators believe additional victims exist and are requesting they come forward. The investigation remains ongoing and authorities ask anyone with information to contact Investigator Porrazzo at (951) 791-3400.
