Downtown Palm Springs pepper spray suspect identified
Man accused of pepper spraying a group of people in downtown Palm Springs has been identified.
Palm Springs police responded to reports of a large fight and a possible assault with a deadly weapon around the 100 block of S. Palm Canyon Thursday at around 10 p.m.
Police were able to determine that Dylon Cooke, 33, allegedly used pepper spray to steal a cellphone from the victim. Officers at the scene told KEQS & CBS Local 2 at least 4 or 5 people had to be treated for decontamination due to the pepper spraying.
One man chased after Cooke but got into a heated argument with a woman during the chase. Officers attempted to make contact with the man, but he was not compliant. Officers eventually had to use a Taser on him.
PSPD were able to quickly locate and apprehend Cooke. Police said Cooke initially lied about his name to conceal the fact he was on Post Release Community Supervision.
Cooke was transported to the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning. He was booked for robbery, assault with a caustic chemical, inflicting injury on a child, false identification to a peace officer, and violation of PRCS.
Anyone with information regarding this investigation is asked to call PSPD at 760-323- 8115. You can also make anonymous crime tips through Crime Stoppers at 760-341-7867.
