Yellow & brown water continues to come out faucets at Indio community

Yesterday we reported on residents at an Indio community who were angry as water from their faucets was coming out yellow and smelly.

The Indio Water Authority told us yesterday the issue had been resolved but some turned on their water today to find more bad water.

“We’re looking at our freshwater toilet and it’s completely yellowish brown,” said Tina Martin, a resident of the Indian Palms community in Indio.

Filling a glass with tap water, she said, “there’s sediment in the bottom, it’s yellow. It smells like, iron smell… And I’m not going to drink it because of health concerns.”

Her sink, toilet and even her pool all appeared yellow or brown, even after Indio Water Authority told customers last night they had cleared the issue.

“Are they living in it, drinking it, bathing in it? Because if they were, they would not be able to say that truthfully,” Martin said. “When you post something … on the internet that everything’s okay and people can use it for their babies, use it for their own selves, use it for people with health concerns, that’s just not true.”

Indio Water Authority officials said again today they’ve resolved the problem on their end — but the bad water could still be lingering in people’s homes.

“We flushed the lines again — we flushed yesterday and we flushed again today and based on the tepidity that we see in our system, it’s okay,” said Brian Macy, general manager of Indio Water Authority. “This is not the standard we have in Indio, but unfortunately once it’s in our system and we flush it, that doesn’t mean it’s out of their house plumbing.”

Martin said she and other residents wish the water company had been more forthcoming with information about the situation.

“First of all I want honesty,” Martin said. “I want the truth. If I know they have to go in and fix it and clear it out — they need to tell us what they’re doing day-by-day.”
