Plans released for Indio Fashion Mall redevelopment

Plans have been released for the redevelopment of the Indio Fashion Mall.

The property was purchased earlier this year for $10 million by Los Angeles-based real estate developer Haagen Co., best known in the valley for owning the Empire Polo Club, where Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals are held annually.

Design renderings show plans to tear down the existing mall and replace it with an outdoor retail plaza, a 10-screen movie theater, a gym, and a 120-room hotel hotel structure on the adjacent lot, which has yet to be acquired by developers. It also includes plans for a 20,000 square foot major retail anchor store.

With dozens of stores gated up and closed for business, shoppers and employees at the Indio Fashion Mall say they’re excited at the prospect of a new outdoor retail plaza taking its place.

“For business its going to be great – more people more customers,” said Veronica Dioso, an employee at Don Roberto Jewelers.

“Actually it feels kind of like the end. You know what I mean? That used to feel like it was somewhere where family these to come and hang out,” said shopper Jeniffer Felix. “It’s going to be really exciting because it’s a lot closer. The valley is growing everyday and so not having to drive all the way to Palm Desert is going to be kind of cool.”

Indio’s Mayor Michael Wilson said he’s hoping to create a sense of place for his residents.

“You can bring your family and dad and the kids can hang out maybe play in the green open space and mom can go shop,” Wilson said.

Managers of the mall said the plans hinge on the commitments from big anchor store tenants, of which there are none that can be announced at this time.
