CA student ID cards required to have suicide prevention hotline

Starting next school year, all student ID cards for grades 7 through 12 will be required to include the suicide prevention hotline. The goal is to strip the stigma of mental health and give students the resources right at their fingertips.

Governor Jerry Brown signed Senate Bill 972 into law earlier this week. All California schools, both public and private, will have 1-800-273-8255, the National Suicide Prevention Hotline, printed on the back of every student ID card.

KESQ & CBS Local 2’s Sarah Trott speaks with a father who rallied for this policy change after being touched personally by suicide.

“I was met with some resistance, and its almost like our schools and our administrators were afraid to discuss and talk about this subject openly.”

His daughter, Madeline passed away by suicide three years ago. She was a student at Sacred Heart and Xaiver.
