Motorist collides with tandem bicycle

A woman and her child were both transported to a local hospital Wednesday after colliding with a motorist as they rode on a tandem bicycle.

Police and firefighters were called to the 68000 Block of Hermosillo Road at 7:15 a.m.

An investigation suggested the mother and her 8-year old son were westbound on Hermosillo riding the tandem bicycle toward Landau Elementary School when a motorist traveling eastbound struck them with the front of the vehicle, according to Commander Paul Herrera.

The motorist was preparing to turn into a driveway on Hermosillo and investigators believe heavy sun facing eastbound seemed to be a contributing factor.

The child suffered an abrasion and minor leg injury. His mother’s injuries were not immediately known, but not considered to be life-threatening, according to Herrera.

The exact details and cause of the collision remained under investigation, according to Herrera.

Cathedral City Police remind the public that early morning sunlight limits clear visibility. And all who use our roadways should consider this and use extra caution during their travels.

Herrera also said, “Additionally, schools have been back in session for a few weeks now and children are frequenting our roadways and sidewalks. Please be considerate of the safety of our greatest resource – our children.”
